Janata Dal United (JDU) is about to get a new national president and in place of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, former IAS officer Ramchandra Prasad Singh will take charge of the party.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Executive Committee of the JDU on Sunday. Nitish himself named Singh in the meeting and other members unanimously agreed to his name.
Singh is considered extremely close to Nitish and will be his political successor.
The background
Let me tell you that Nitish Kumar recently talked about making Ramchandra Singh his political successor. In a meeting held at the JDU office in Patna, Nitish had said that Singh would handle all the work after him.
This was the first time Nitish had made a clear statement about his political successor and since then Singh’s next JDU president was almost certain to be decided.
Apart from Nitish’s statement, it was also clear from the responsibilities being given in the JDU that Singh is number two in the party after Nitish. Singh had a speech just before Nitish at party meetings since June, which usually gives the party’s number two leader.
Apart from this, at the time of assembly elections, Nitish had relied most on Singh in seat sharing and selection of candidates.
