The ordinance provides for punishment of up to 10 years
The state government’s ordinance, called the Uttar Pradesh Laws Against Religion Prohibition Ordinance, 2020, has made provisions to prevent conversion by seduction, coercion or fraud, by inducement or by marriage.
On doing this, a provision of imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 25,000 has been made. Mass conversion can lead to a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 50,000.
The District Magistrate’s approval has to be taken before converting for marriage

Apart from this, a provision of minimum three years and maximum of ten years punishment has been made for violation of rules in respect of any minor and women belonging to scheduled castes and tribes. With this, a fine of Rs 25,000 can also be imposed.
